Fat iron shots happen when the clubhead strikes turf before the ball. Fix starts with setup and sequence: ball too far forward, weight staying back, early cast or scooping with the hands, or a steep, over-the-top downswing all create chunked contact. Make small, measurable changes: move ball slightly back for short-to-mid irons, set your hands slightly ahead of the ball at address, and tilt from the hips so your chest stays ahead of the ball. Initiate the downswing with your lower body (left hip rotation for right‑handers) to shallow the club and preserve the shaft angle into impact. Look to impact where the hands lead and the clubhead compresses the ball before the turf. Use short, focused practice reps and groove a shallow divot pattern starting just after the ball.
Common causes
Ball too far forward or weight on trail foot at address
Early release/casting of the wrists before impact
Steep/over‑the‑top downswing instead of starting with lower body
Practice ideas
Half‑swing divot drill: hit 50% swings aiming to make a divot starting 1–2 inches after ball; focus on hands leading impact
Towel under armpits drill: 25 shots keeping towel in place to maintain connection and prevent arms from flipping
Step‑through drill: make slow 3⁄4 swings and step the back foot forward through impact to train weight shift and shallow delivery
